Master control of “close space” between the practitioner and attacker that is closer than the normal boxing/ MMA distance, but not quite grappling. If you consider grappling distance to be between 0 and 5 inches, and boxing distance to be between 2 and 5 feet, Short-hand develops skill at the in-between distance between 5 inches and 3 feet. Since that defender-attacker distance is rarely studied in the martial arts, mastering that space gives the knowledgeable defender a distinct advantage.

Two points are essential to Short-hand training. Second, balance with fight training under an awkward standing position teaches the student to be in control of balance (and effectively apply power) under any condition, which affords another distinct advantage.
